For the Quarter Ending June 2023
North America
The price of graphite in the US spot market during the second quarter has seen a mixed trend. At the beginning of the quarter, there was a decline in demand for graphite electrodes from end users as inventory levels remained high. The US government faced economic challenges due to the downfall of major banks, which resulted in a debt crisis in the spot market. As a result, the weakening economy negatively impacted the consumption of graphite, with the demand from the downstream electrode manufacturing industry remaining low as steelmaking activities slowed down in local steel mills. Additionally, the price difference between locally manufactured ultra-high power (UHP) and high power (HP) electrodes narrowed compared to foreign-manufactured electrodes, leading to increased competition from overseas markets. Major market players noted a reduction in destocking rates as they already had sufficient supply. This lack of urgency among major electrode producers led to an increase in local inventory levels. Moreover, the rising coke prices and challenges in increasing trade rates put downward pressure on graphite prices in US mills. Local mills were compelled to lower their prices in order to attract more orders and improve the declining market conditions.
Asia-Pacific
Similar to North America, the price of graphite in the Chinese spot market during the second quarter showed a mixed trend. There was a decline in demand for graphite electrodes from end users, as inventory levels remained high. The slowdown in steelmaking activities in local electric arc furnace-based steel mills across China led to lower demand from the downstream electrode manufacturing industry. Major market players also experienced a reduction in destocking rates due to sufficient supply. The lack of urgency among major electrode producers caused local inventory levels to increase. Like in North America, the price difference between locally manufactured ultra-high power (UHP) and high power (HP) electrodes narrowed compared to foreign-manufactured electrodes, increasing competition from overseas markets. Rising coke prices and challenges in increasing trade rates further added downward pressure on graphite prices in Chinese mills. To combat the declining market conditions, local mills were prompted to lower their prices and attract more orders.

Europe
In the German spot market, the price of graphite also showed a mixed trend during the second quarter. Demand for graphite from the downstream electrode manufacturing industry remained low, mirroring the slowdown in steelmaking activities in local electric arc furnace-based steel mills across Germany. Major market players noted a lack of urgency, leading to an increase in local inventory levels. Rising coke prices and challenges in increasing trade rates put downward pressure on graphite prices in German mills. The price difference between locally manufactured ultra-high power (UHP) and high power (HP) electrodes narrowed compared to foreign-manufactured electrodes, intensifying competition from overseas markets. Similarly to North America and Asia-Pacific, local mills in Germany had to lower their prices to stimulate demand and improve the declining market conditions.
