Overview of Google AI Ads, New Link Formats, AI-Organized Search Results, and More Updates
Google recently announced several new AI-driven search features, including the rollout of search ads to AI Overviews, a new link format, AI-organized search results, enhanced AI shopping capabilities, Google Lens updates, and more.
While I was offline when the announcement was made, I had received an early heads-up, allowing me to write up the details for Search Engine Land and schedule the post in time.
Ads in Google AI Overviews
Google Search and Shopping Ads are now rolling out to AI Overviews, featuring the "Sponsored" label like other search ads. Initially available to mobile users in the U.S., these ads come after months of testing.
"People have found the ads in AI Overviews helpful because they can quickly connect with relevant businesses, products, and services at the exact moment they need them," Google wrote.
Here’s a screenshot showing how the ads appear underneath the AI Overviews.
Google is also extending Shopping Ads through Google Lens. By the end of the year, Shopping ads will display above and alongside visual search results. Google explained, "For example, if you're at a mall and spot a backpack in a store window that catches your eye, you can quickly tap the Lens icon in the search bar, snap a photo or upload one from your gallery to learn more about the product. Lens will use AI models and Google’s Shopping Graph, which contains information on over 45 billion products, to identify the item."
Links Updated in AI Overviews
In August, Google previewed a new link format for AI Overviews, which is now rolling out globally in all countries where AI Overviews are available.
Google shared, "With AI Overviews, we’ve noticed users visiting a wider range of websites to address more complex queries. These clicks are also of higher quality, meaning users spend more time on the sites they visit."
Feedback from testing has been positive, with Google noting, "This improved experience has driven increased traffic to supporting websites compared to the previous design, and users are finding it easier to explore sites that interest them."
This version condenses the original content for clarity and readability while maintaining all key details.
