Google Search Ranking Volatility Spikes on February 4th and 5th
There’s been a noticeable surge in conversation within the SEO community about a potential unconfirmed Google search ranking update in the past 24 hours. Interestingly, while many tools aren’t showing significant spikes in volatility, the level of chatter is exceptionally high.
This follows previously observed ranking fluctuations on January 29th and 30th, and earlier over the weekend and around January 20th, during which some tools experienced tracking issues.

SEO Discussions
A lot of the buzz is centered around discussions on this site, including this post and this one, as well as on WebmasterWorld. Here are a few notable comments:
- “I’m hesitant to say this, but I’ve just seen my 9th consecutive day of improvements in averages.”
- “From January 1–25 to January 26–February 3, I’ve seen a 44% increase in both page views and visitors, and this trend is continuing today.”
- “What’s most noticeable is the increased visitor engagement—viewing and researching more pages like before, particularly from Eurasia.”
- “Did a switch just get flipped? No doubt it’ll switch off soon!”
On the other side:
- “On my end, things are dropping daily, with a huge dip this morning.”
- “I’m seeing increased impressions but fewer clicks and a tanking average position. Anyone else experiencing a loss of impressions in Search Console?”
- “Traffic’s been dead today.”
- “My entire site tanked on February 5th—looks like another update hit.”
