When will the subsequent total solar eclipse occur in the United States following April 8, 2024?
"Eclipse Across America" will be broadcast live on Monday, April 8, starting at 2 p.m. ET on various platforms including ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+, Hulu, and network social media platforms.
If witnessing totality during the April 8 total solar eclipse leaves you craving another celestial spectacle, you might have to wait for decades.
"Solar eclipses are a bit like potato chips – once you've had one, you want more," said Fred Espenak, a former astrophysicist from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the author of "Road Atlas for the Total Solar Eclipse of 2024," in an interview with ABC News.
"Every eclipse holds its own uniqueness and excitement," Espenak continued. "I would argue it's the most spectacular natural phenomenon visible to the naked eye." On Monday, the total solar eclipse carved a path through the contiguous United States, casting an eerie twilight and revealing the sun's corona and the stars in the atmosphere as the moon traversed across the sun.
For the 31 million Americans residing within the eclipse's path of totality, the experience unfolded at their doorstep, while millions of other eclipse enthusiasts traveled to the 115-mile-wide path for this historic event.
"Many individuals will undoubtedly catch the eclipse bug and become part of the cohort of eclipse chasers, willing to travel to any corner of the globe to witness nature's most dramatic display," Michael Zeiler, an expert solar eclipse cartographer and founder of Greatamericaneclipse.com, shared with ABC News.
Next Total Solar Eclipse in the U.S. after 2024
The subsequent total solar eclipse to grace the contiguous U.S. won't occur until August 23, 2044, and will only pass over three states in its trajectory: Montana and North and South Dakota, as per NASA. In Canada, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan will also witness totality, according to the agency.
Next Coast-to-Coast Total Solar Eclipse
The following year, on August 12, 2045, a total solar eclipse will span coast to coast, as projected by NASA.
The expansive path of totality will sweep across portions of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, as reported by the agency. Similar to the total solar eclipse in 2017, the 2045 event presents an opportunity for numerous Americans to witness totality within their own states.
Adding to the anticipation for these events decades away, both the 2044 and 2045 eclipses are scheduled for August, increasing the likelihood of clear, cloudless skies during the spectacle.
Next Total Solar Eclipse Internationally
If waiting for two decades seems too long, another total solar eclipse is slated to occur in Europe in 2026.
On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse is set to sweep over the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal, and northern Spain, according to the National Solar Observatory.
"Witnessing a total solar eclipse is an incredibly emotional experience for anyone," Zeiler remarked. "And the immediate question you may ask after witnessing one is: When is the next one? You may even find yourself planning to witness the very next eclipse in Spain in 2026."
